Nike unveiled Nike Considered Design at an event in New York City featuring Considered footwear and apparel which combine sustainability principles with the newest innovations for sport. Nike Considered Design will now be featured in all of Nike’s six key categories: basketball, running, football (soccer), women’s training, men’s training and sportswear, as well as in tennis and ACG (All Condition Gear).

The event was held at 7 World Trade Center in Manhattan, the first commercial office building in New York City to receive the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. The building currently holds a gold rating.

The showcase was led by Nike President & CEO Mark Parker, Considered GM Lorrie Vogel, Creative Director Richard Clarke and Running Design Director Andreas Harlow.

“As we look at how we design and develop products and run our global business, it’s not enough to be solving the challenges of today,” said President and CEO Mark Parker. “We are designing for the sustainable economy of tomorrow, and for us that means using fewer resources, more sustainable materials and renewable energy to produce new products.”

The Pegasus, Nike’s top selling running shoe, celebrated its 25th year by becoming Considered. With smarter pattern efficiency, environmentally preferred and recycled materials, the Pegasus reduces waste.

The long-term vision for Considered is to design products that are fully closed loop: produced using the fewest possible materials, designed for easy disassembly while allowing them to be recycled into new product or safely returned to nature at the end of their life. By 2011, 100 percent of footwear will meet baseline Considered standards, apparel by 2015 and equipment by 2020 – creating better performing products while minimizing environmental impact by reducing waste, using environmentally preferred materials and eliminate toxins.

As part of Nike’s long-term effort to make a difference, an online sustainability course will be offered to 100 Nike employees. Step by Natural Step™ and Sustainability 101™ are interactive on-line courses that provide practical sustainability education and can educate others on how to apply concepts to everyday life in order to move strategically toward sustainability.
